The following is a World Herald Newspaper article printed on December 7, 1932.

"A MARKSMAN IN DAYS OF OLD"

C. F. Gottsch, 86, of Bennington, Once Won All the Turkeys. Shake the hand of Charles Frederick Gottsch, 86 of Bennington, Neb., the hand that right near Omaha has pulled the trigger of a shotgun and brought down a wild deer-two pulls, two wild deer! True, that's a long time back, when Omaha wasn't much bigger than Bennington is today, but the chances are there are few good duck hunters current who can say as much for their shotgun.

Mr. Gottsch, native of Denmark, came to America and Iowa when he was 6 years old. In 1859, after a brief stop at Fort Calhoun, the family settled two and one-half miles northwest of Bennington in Jefferson precinct. From boyhood, Mr. Gottsch was interested in guns for his dad was an expert with them and once up and made a good one of horseshoe nails, strange as that may seem.

MADE HIS OWN GUN

Mr. Gottsch built guns also. In fact, he made the gun that killed the two deer. He also shot a wild cat, now mounted and in his possession, and recalls wild turkey, antelope and wolves in number about his farm home.

It was as a member of the Omaha Schutzen Verein that held forth in Ruser's park on West Center street, that his fame with a rifle became general. After trimming the champion of Washington county standing, sitting and lying flat on his front, he moved around the country taking part in the big rifle contests and bringing home not only medals, but a great variety of prizes, including merchandise and money. In defeating the champion of Washington county, Mr. Gottsch lying flat on his back and firing over his head scored a bullseye at two hundred yards - while the champ couldn't even hit the target!

In Milwaukee, against 127 of the best shots in the northwestern rifle tournament, he scored three successive bullseyes on the two hundred yard range and was awarded a handsome 12 gauge shotgun, worth several hundred dollars, with an engraved gold plate in the pistol grip. In the Omaha meets of the Schutzen Verein he competed with such well known shots as Hans A. Lamp, Peter Goos, Fred Schroeder of Millard, Hans Petty.

Mr. Gottsch, it is said, can still show some of the youngsters a thing or two about drawing a bead. He makes his home with his son, Fred, of Bennington. There are three other children, Ben of Washington, Neb.; Otto, living on the old home farm, and Mrs. Amanda Winterburn of Elkhorn, 29 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Note The following story was translated from German to English, the author is Klaus Göttsch the 3rd great grandson fo Claus Hinrich Göttsch.

Stein in 1872

This year the big storm flood was on the Baltic coast. Emil Arthur Göttsch had become just 4 years old. Virtually traumatically the following experiences must have been for the 4-year-old in November 1872:

On October 13, 1872 his brother Heinrich Eduard is born. The mother, Trine Göttsch, does not recover by the birth. She still lies in the bed, has shivering fit, high fever and goes to ruin visibly. She has the puerperal fever! An illness which appeared as frequent earlier and was often deadly. On November 8, 1872 the mother dies. She suffers therefore the same destiny like her mother, Charlotte Göttsch, born. Harder, on March 8, 1847 in Village Göders 2 weeks after the birth of her daughter Lena in the lying-in had died.

Now the 4-year-old Emil is alone with his father, Claus Hinrich Göttsch, his 10-year-old brother Hermann and the 4 weeks old, not yet baptized baby. Now grandmother Antje supplies the children only. The burial of the mother should occur on November 12. For days it attacks, and now has also changed since the wind yesterday to north-east and has become even stronger. After the water was extremely low for days, so that one could far run out to the sand benches, now it rages schnell come back and already stands frighteningly high. In the morning of November 12 the water stands already few meters before the house. It has got cold sensitively. Everything is in big worry. The burial occurs in big haste, almost in a hurry, because the worry about house and court lets everything in thoughts be somewhere else. Everything runs for the burial home. For grief and devotion is no time. The water rises and everything is not stowed away what firmly, is torn away by the storm. Many roofs in the village have already suffered damage. Grandfather Hans and father Claus Hinrich do to themselves big worries about house, boat and nets. Trusted as a Fischer with wind and weather, they know around the menacing danger. About evening the wind seems to decrease a little, one scoops hope. At night is not to be thought of sleep. The men go constantly after outdoors to see after the water. The wind increases again. Snowy activity starts, accompanied by flash and thunder. It seems to become a hurricane. Against tomorrow the water has reached the house. The waves hit against the house wall and it is to be seen that the house can stand firm not long. The roof is quite severely damaged from the storm, constantly new parts are torn away. The storm has already torn off the boat of father Claus Hinrich which was fixed in Laboe. It is carried off and disappeared. About 05.00 o'clock become in all haste a few belongings packed up and to the higher situated shore brought. However, certainly it is not there also. The water already penetrates into the village, because the weak dykes can detain the water no more.

Grandmother Antje has run with the children in the village. In the house of the farmer Asmus Klindt they are taken up and supplied. About midday it is so far: The house breaks down under the force of the attacking breakers. Everything what grandparents Hans and Antje Göttsch with son Claus Hinrich and daughter-in-law Trine had built up and had created is destroyed and lost, has remained the naked life and what they carry on the body. Mother Trine has experienced this last part of the drama no more. Also Hans and Claus Hinrich Göttsch find accomodation with the farmer Asmus Klindt. Together with 6 other families they remain there 7 weeks. Then, finally, the wooden barracks which have built the soldiers used in the meantime of the Prussian army for the victims of the storm flood are ready. The storm flood releases a wave of the auxiliary readiness. Donations come from everywhere. Clothes, beds, pieces of furniture and household effects, but also cash donations. To least ones the material need was removed.

Indeed, just, but the drama of death and storm flood must not have happened so similarly in November, 1872 in Stein. Half a century later great-grandfather Claus Hinrich Göttsch on the occasion of his 90-year birthdays describes the experiences during those days to a reporter of the " Kiel news. “

Claus Hinrich Göttsch story
Claus Hinrich Göttsch Kiel News

A Ninetythree-ager
Tomorrow, Wednesday, Klaus Hinrich Göttsch from Stein will finish his 93rd year. In his earlier days he had made his living by stone fishing *. During the storm tide on Nov.13, 1872 he had been hit by a bitter blow of fate. His home had been washed away by the flood and his stone fishing boat was driven away from the Laboe harbor and ran aground on the circumvallation of the Friedrichsort fortress. Only one day before the storm flood he had to consign his wife to the grave and was left alone with three children, the youngest being but 4 weeeks old then. Later on he married again and now he's widowed again since 32 years. Though advanced in years he still is hale and hearty taking an active interest in all events. He likes helping in house and garden. Without needing glasses he daily reads The Kieler Neueste Nachrichten (Kiel's Latest News) being a subscriber since its foundation.

*) stone fishing: The ice age left masses of boulders not only on land but even more of them on the bottom of the Baltic Sea as well. Using special tools and boats stone fishers get them out of the water to sell them as cheap and utmost stable building material. Stone fishing as an occupation still is existing today but is becoming severely cut back by government because it annihilates spawning places of fish.

The life in Stein goes on. In 1875 Claus Hinrich Göttsch the second time marries. Emil and his both brothers get a stepmother. It is Ida Göttsch from piece of Wisch. This year Emil comes to the school. In the Prussian province Schleswig - Holstein the children are school-age – in contrast to the old Prussian family provinces – 9 years. A relic from the time when the dukedom Holstein still belonged to the Danish crown. Stein in 1881

The winter evenings in Stein are long, like everywhere on the coast, and hard like everywhere at that time in the small Katen, no matter whether on the coast or in the mountains. The icy wind whistles by the door and window scratches, and it so wants no where to become really warm. There are not oil heatings or gas heatings yet. One cooks with wood, peat or coal, depending on what exists and who can afford it, that still heats. Electricity? If there is not yet in Stein. In the evening one sits with the light of a suet light or the paraffin lamp in a room together. The women do manual labor, the small children, thus they must not go yet in the bed, play, the older ones follow at all an employment. If one must do not exactly home work to earn a little something for the living, then one talks, one makes music or one signs, because there is not television or radio likewise yet.

This year, exactly said on September 29th Emil Arthur Göttsch celebrates his 13th birthday. He lives with his parents and brothers and sisters together in Stein. Where exactly and in which house, can be determined no more. The old house which still his grandfather, the fisherman Hans Göttsch had built in 1859 had been torn away 9 years before, on the 13th November 1872, by the big storm flood. In 1877 the house was not rebuilt yet. When it was rebuilt, up to now I could not investigate yet talks, one makes music or one signs, because there is not television or radio likewise yet.

Emils brother Ernst is born. Emil is in the 6-th class of the Steiner school. He discovers the world in his schoolbook. It is the realities book, which fascinates him. These are the sketches of distant lands, from foreign people, from unknown animals, from foreign statesmen who interest him. From his allowance, I suppose, he has bought to himself an expensive sign notebook with white paper in the big format, and he begins to draw pictures from the book. He acts with a care and detailed loyalty, which is unusual and admirable. It brings him obviously fun. He spends many hours with the drawing, because he is very precise, and does not want to waste he his paper. Maybe the wish is also born during these hours to visit these distant lands and to look at the places of interest in natural size and splendour. 10 years later follows the action. As a shoemaker's journeyman he walks 7 months by the German empire, through Switzerland and through France up to the Mt. Blanc.

Blanc.

288. Lena6 Götsch (Hans5, Mars4, Peter3 Götsch , Clas2 Gotsche, Peter1 Gotsch) was born January 25, 1837 in Barsbek, Duchy Holstein. Lena died April 13, 1917 in Lisco, Nebraska at 80 years of age.

Lena Gotsch

Lena was born January 25, 1837 in Barsbeck, Schoenberg parish, Holstein, Germany. She worked in Pussia as a hired girl, milking cows and carrying the milk a great distance by shoulder yoke. She stored the milk in cool caves. She was paid $12.00 per year and two solid silver tablespoons. The hallmark on one was 25 Marz (May 25).

Lena came to the U.S. at age 30 in 1867. She was in the 1870 Census of Davenport, Scott Co., Iowa, where she lived with a family and worked as a servant. At the time, Henry Stender was also living in Davenport. They met and married Oct. 25 1873.

Henry and Lena took their young family to Alda or Grand Island, Nebraska by covered wagon, arriving on Nov. 4, 1884. Edward was 9 and Hertha was 7. They lived on the Stuhr farm east of Grand Island. At some point before 1900, Henry had a farm machinery sale. He took the money and left his wife & children.

After her husband left, Lena & her two children lived in a small house at 1215 Louise in Grand Island. Her son-in-law and daughter, Charles & Hattie Sothmann, lived with her after their marriage. They had the old house razed and built a new one on the same property in 1911. The new home had eight rooms and provided plenty of space for the growing family.

When Charles Sothmann was advised by his doctor to move to a higher elevation and drier climate, Lena moved with Charles & Hattie and their family of five to a farm about five miles north of Lisco, Nebraska in 1916. These eight brave soles moved from a large house with two stories and a full basement to a 2-room sod house. They all must have been heart-sick to have such tight quarters. There wasn't a tree on the place. Summers were hot. And, winters were brutally cold. Lena didn't live long. She died the following spring, April 13, 1917, at age 79.

Heinrich ("Henry") Stender

Henry, siblings and parents emigrated from Saxon, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany in about 1868. In 1870, the family was in Davenport, Scott Co., Iowa. He married Lena Goettsch October 23, 1873, in Davenport.
