The Revolutionary War disrupted all aspects of life in the Hudson River Valley; villages were laid to waste by British and Indian attacks, and many civilians were killed. Major campaigns in the area included the siege of Fort Stawix, the Battle of Oriskany in 1777, the Cherry Valley Massacre in 1778, General John Sullivan's expedition against the Iroquois through the Finger Lakes Region in 1779, and the raid of Colonel Sir John Johnson through the Schoharie and Mohawk Valleys in 1781. Some reports state that the region was left with 12,000 abandoned farmsteads, 380 widows, and 2,000 orphans.

Conrad and his family resided around Schoharie and Middleburg. After one of the Indian massacres during the Revolutionary War, the family left its large property and was driven into the Schoharie Valley. Judick was shot in the body by an Indian during the Massacre but recovered.
