7. John5 Gorton (Samuel4, Thomas3, Thomas2, Thomas1) was born 1640 in Warwick, Rhode Island, and died February 3, 1713 in Warwick, Rhode Island. He married Margaret Weeden January 25, 1664 in Warwick, Rhode Island. She was born Abt. 1648 in Warwick, Rhode Island.
Notes:
John was given all the lands west of Warwick by his father, including the land at Cranston. In 1668, he bought land with orchards and buildings from William and Hannah Burton. In 1677 he and 47 others received a grant from the colony of 5,000 acres of land in East Greenwich, CT in consideration of their services in King Phillips war. East Greenwich included what is now West Greenwich, the latter having been set from it in 1741. John was a Mariner and this occupation kept him absent from his home and thusly, absent from a lot of early documents and records of the town and colony.

Notes:
Benjamin Gorton lived the greater majority of his life in Warwick. In 1677 he was among those who were granted 5,000 acres to be called East Greenwich for their services in "King Philips war". He was in 1686 Deputy, or member of the "Upper House" of the Rhode Island Legislature and Captain of the Military Company at the time of his death.
His will was made August 25, 1721 proved August 7, 1724, mentions his wife, sons and daughters and the latters husband's and surnames.
