His family did not approve of his conversion, and afterwards there was "bad blood" between him and some of his family.

Throughout his life, Leonard served as an Omaha Fire Captain, when he developed emphysema from inhaling smoke, a tavern proprietor, and a Deputy County Sheriff. Leonard liked to shoot craps - when his children were little, he would gamble away his paycheck to coworkers at the fire station. Jennie soon began picking up his paycheck! In their later years, they bought houses as a hobby, refurbished them, and sold them for a profit.

Notes:
Letter by William Gottsch about his memories of his parents, grandparents and a brief history of his family.

The reason I remembered uncle Clarence was, when I was in high school and searching for a career, he told my parents I should go into the printing business and he could get me a job as a printer, for the company he had worked for. So, I took up printing in high school (Technical High) and went to work as a printer and staved for a number of years before going into the Army in 1967. What was my job in the military? A printer, go figure. When I was discharged in 1970, I went into law enforcement and just retired this past December after 31 years as a State Deputy Sheriff. I held the rank of Lieutenant and did warrants and extraditions.

I will try and tell as much as I can remember about my grandfather and grandmother. Grandpa was a very handsome man. My grandparents had two children, (1) Georgia Mae, (2) Lois Jean, my mother. Georgia Mae died in infancy. She was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, as are my grandparents. At some time the cemetery moved the children's section and her grave was lost. Grandpa was a very sick man, he had asthma, and it became worse as he got older. I remember he worked as a building engineer at the old Omaha Athletic Club and drove a cab for the Yellow Cab Company before his death.

Because I was the first grandchild, and a boy, they spoiled me. I think I spent as much time with them as I did my parents until my sisters were born. In 1953, the doctors told them to move to a drier climate to help with the asthma, so they moved to Phoenix. At that time, Phoenix was not much more than a dirty little town with board sidewalks. They missed the family and only stayed there for about six months, then returned to Omaha. The asthma became worse and finally killed him in 1955. His last request was that none of the grandchildren attend the funeral, he wanted us to remember him as he was, when he was alive.

Grandma remained single for a number of years, then she married a man who mistreated her and divorced him after a year. About 1973 she met and married a man, named Gail Hood. Gail had been in Vaudeville as a tenor, and was good friends with Bob Hope. They had played the same vaudeville circuits as young men. Bob never failed to send a Christmas card every year. Gail died in 1977, about a year after my mother passed away from asthma and cancer. Luckily, the asthma gene stopped with her.

My mother and father met in about 1943. She was about 15 years old at that time. It was said that she was on the rebound when she met my dad. They married on September 11, 1943. I was born in September of 1945, mom had just turned 17 that April. My dad worked as a carpenter most of his life. He did earn his engineer's license and work with my grandfather Ralph for a few years. When the Omaha Athletic Club closed he went back to work as a carpenter. He earned the reputation and became foreman on all the jobs he worked. During the winter months, when work was slow, he and my mother started their own office cleaning business. As time went by he would work his construction job during the day and clean offices at night. My mother helped until I got old enough to go with him.

Our family did the normal things families do, we camped, boated, etc. The family house was were all my friends came to hang out. In 1958 we built a new home on the corner of 67th and Grant Street here in Omaha. My dad, my grandfather Gottsch, my mother and I drove every nail in the house. The basement was large and finished with a pool table on one side and a recreation room on the other half. A lot of high school parties were held there.

My folks had six children, 3 boys and 3 girls. My two brothers died in infancy and the oldest of my sisters, Danna, just passed away this past November from cancer. My middle sister, Debbi lives here in Omaha and the youngest sister, Elaine, lives in Rochester, Washington. Christmas was a very special time for our family. It was my mother's favorite season. She would decorate the house to the hilt with decorations, some she had made. My dad would put up the outside decorations adorned with lights. Our house was the most decorated on the block. My mother was an excellent cook, and loved to prepare the holiday meals, and looked forward to opening her gifts as much as us kids.

In 1964 my brother Timothy was born, he was diagnosed as having a reversed heart with a hole in one side. He died at 3 months only hours before he was to receive heart surgery. The hardest part was my mother was the one to find him deceased in his hospital bed. In 1965 my brother James was born 3 months premature and lived for only 24 hours. The death of my brothers took a great toll on my mother. My parents stayed together for about a year and a half, but their marriage was never the same. For some reason my mother blamed my dad for the boys dying. In 1967 just after I left for bootcamp, they separated. She wanted to go to bars, dance and date new men. It was almost like she was living the life she missed by getting married so young. My mother was very young looking. I was dating a girl who was a dancer at a local nightclub and mom wanted to go there one night with me. The girl I was dating became very jealous, thinking I had brought another girl to the club, I had one hell of a time explaining she was my mother.

Dad and mom finally divorced, and he re-married for a short time. He, unfortunately never stopped loving her. He would never say anything derogatory about her. When she died in 1976, his heart was broken, and I saw my father cry for the first time in my life. Dad was a big man, having worked construction his whole life. He stood 6' tall and weighted about 260. His hands were so big that I could wear his wedding ring on my thumb and it was still loose. He was from the old school that men don't cry and hide their feelings. When he would return to Omaha to visit he would try and shake my hand, I was the one who would put my arms around him and give him a hug. In 1996, he came back here to visit and as it turned out so did my sister, Danna and her family. We were able to have a family reunion one last time, he died about a month later.
